Judge overrules St. Paul City Council, puts renter repair law to voters

A Ramsey County judge has decided to put the right-to-repair proposal before St. Paul voters this November after the city council recently declined to move it forward.

If approved, renters would be able to make certain repairs after notifying their landlord before deducting the repair cost from their rent.

The St. Paul City Council cited legal concerns when they voted 5-2 against the proposal, but the judge said those concerns were not clear enough to keep the question off the November ballot.

If voters approve it, renters would be able to make repairs of up to $500 or one-half month’s rent after notifying their landlord.
