Hennepin County Library is preparing a proposal to reduce public hours next year due to budget changes.
Under the proposal, library hours would drop about 7% across the county, or roughly 140 hours per week, starting January 2027. The changes are part of a budget request that is not yet final, according to library leadership.
Hennepin County Library Director Scott Duimstra said most locations would shift to more consistent eight-hour service days and some would gain hours on Sundays.
Why the changes?
The proposal is tied to growing cost pressures across the county. Hennepin County said certain factors like higher personnel costs, inflation and uncertainty in federal funding are raising operational costs.
Duimstra said under the proposal, no library locations will close.
