The Hennepin County Library will alter hours across its system in 2027 due to budget constraints.
The hours, which still have to be approved by the Hennepin County Adminstration and the Board of Commissioners, were shared in an announcement on Thursday, Aug. 6. The alterations are a response to rising costs due to inflation, health insurance, staffing, and other variables that will require the system to find around $5 million in efficiencies to absorb the changes.
The proposal cuts hours across the system by 7 percent, the equivalent of about 140 hours per week. Broadly, most libraries will have shortened hours, including hours of operation earlier in the day. Though some will gain extended hours on Sundays.
