Free school meals cost rises as Minnesota serves 450 million meals to students in 3 years

Minnesota has served 450 million free school meals in 3 years as debate grows over the program’s rising cost.

The state’s free school meals program began in 2024 and saw a surge in participation right away. Governor Tim Walz said last week it is one of the programs he is most proud of during his two terms.

“We know what the research shows. When they come in and eat a nutritious breakfast, they do better in the classroom,” Walz said.

According to the governor’s office, the program was originally projected to cost about $400 million in its first 2 years. It cost $276 million in 2024 and $294 million in 2025.

The most recent forecast estimates another $637 million split over the next two years. When asked about the growing costs, Walz said the higher price shows the program matters even more than first expected.
