BATON ROUGE, La. — Five people have died from a flesh-eating bacteria in Louisiana, where nine cases have been confirmed so far this year.
Vibrio vulnificus is a bacterium found in warm water, and it can be deadly. Cases typically peak between May and October, when water temperatures are warm. People often become infected by entering brackish water with open wounds or by eating raw or undercooked seafood.
The infection can be life-threatening, with state health officials warning roughly one in five people infected with Vibrio vulnificus die.
