The FDA says the device could help address the shortage of trained phlebotomists in the United States.
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday authorized the first standalone robotic device that can draw blood from a patient’s arm without a hands-on operator.
The device, called Aletta, was designed by Vitesro, a medical robotics company based in the Netherlands.
Aletta performs most of the blood-draw process and automates it, while a trained phlebotomist supervises. The FDA said a phlebotomist can oversee up to three devices at once.
