Governor Walz ordered flags fly at half-staff at all state buildings in Minnesota to honor Leslie Washington.

Flags are flying at half-staff across Minnesota to honor a firefighter who died while responding to a wildfire near Ely on Tuesday.

Leslie Washington was assigned to the Bear Trap Fire that's north of Sunday Lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. It's burning about 30,000 acres - part of a larger complex that started more than a month ago in that area. Officials say the Bear Trap Fire is about 45% contained. 

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said Washington died following a medical emergency. He served this wildland fire season as a member of the K-River 2 crew, a Tribal firefighting crew, on assignment with Scorched Earth Services and the U.S. Wildland Fire Service.
