Electric scooters swarmed downtown Minneapolis Saturday night, sparking safety concerns and city response

The Minnesota State Patrol and Minneapolis Police are concerned about public safety after witnesses saw hundreds of scooters on the interstate near downtown.

MINNEAPOLIS — Hundreds of electric scooters and e-bikes took over downtown Minneapolis Saturday night. 

The riders posted video of the takeover on social media with some participants saying the event was about community and bringing people together to have fun.

But around 10:30 p.m., the Minnesota State Patrol received phone calls from witnesses seeing between 200 and 300 scooters driving on I-35 near 4th Street.

"This just creates a very dangerous situation,” Minnesota State Patrol Colonel Christina Bogojevic said.
