Mesabi East Schools is reporting spending an extra $54,000 on fuel if prices stay this high.
Diesel prices across the U.S. continue to sit at a record high at $6.53 per gallon, which is up almost $3 from last year at this time.
Those prices are having big impacts on several rural school districts in Minnesota, according to RAMS Executive Director Paul Peltier. The Range Association of Municipalities and Schools is a nonprofit that represents communities, townships, and school districts on the Iron Range.
"It is an unexpected cost being incurred by districts at a time when they cannot afford it," said Peltier.
