Crew member fighting northern Minnesota wildfire dead after medical emergency

A crew member working to fight wildfires in northern Minnesota died on Tuesday morning after having a medical emergency.

Officials with the Superior National Forest Service say first responders and fire crews responded to the July Lightning Fire in Ely around 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday after it was reported a person “assigned to the incident” had a medical emergency.

The person was brought to the hospital, where they died, forest service officials said. Their identity and role in combating the wildfires have not been released.

As of Monday, there were over 760 personnel assigned to the wildfires, with a combined overall acreage increased to 73,742 acres.
