Como Zoo to host hourly pumpkin ‘smash’ on Tuesday

What does a place like St. Paul’s Como Zoo do with leftover Halloween pumpkins? The simple answer can be summed up in three words: nom nom nom!

That’s the sound of a happy gorilla carving through pumpkin like it’s birthday cake. But it’s not just the big apes that will get fed some sweet pumpkin meat on Tuesday. The same delectable menu will be shared with spider monkeys, penguins, polar bears, dall sheep and even rainforest insects.

The pumpkins were donated by Trader Joe’s and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum.

Interested in watching the great pumpkin smash massacre, er, food train go down? Como Zoo has published a list of pumpkin feeding times for Tuesday, as follows:

• 10 to 11 a.m.: Gorillas, orangutans, large cats.

• 11 to 12 p.m.: Giraffe, zebra, bison, dall sheep, nyala.

• 12 to 1 p.m.: Wolves, tamarins, spider monkeys and patas monkeys.

• 1 to 2 p.m.: Polar bears...
