The Department of Homeland Security says an illegal immigrant that was involved in a fatal crash that killed a Connecticut college hockey player, should not have been in the country after being deported twice from the United States.
What we know:
The Connecticut State Police identified Ryan O’Shea as the deceased victim in an Oct. 16 vehicle crash when a pickup truck, being driven the wrong-way, crashed head-on into his vehicle on Interstate 91 in North Haven, Connecticut.
The pickup’s driver, Guillermo Carmona-Lopez, was hospitalized with serious, life-threatening injuries.
What they're saying:
In a post on X, DHS identified Carmona-Lopez as an "illegal alien from Mexico," saying he had been removed from the United States twice before the fatal crash.
Dig deeper:
According to a news release from the University of New Haven, O’Shea was a criminal justice major concentrating in police science who hoped to pursue a career in law enforcement.
O'Shea is also listed as a member and senior captain of the university's men's hockey team.
"Ryan was an avid sports fan, and he was always ready to have a sports-related conversation," said his academic adviser, Lorenzo Boyd, the university’s Stewart Professor of Community Policing. "Ryan wanted to go into public service in order to help others. He was engaging in the classroom and will be missed greatly."
Connecticut State Police continue to investigate the crash with assistance from the department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad.
