Closure of major St. Paul homeless camp pushes residents to one nearby as shelters keep beds open

As St. Paul cleared the Pig’s Eye Park homeless encampment Wednesday, an outreach worker said many of the people who had been living there packed their belongings and moved to another encampment underneath the Randolph Avenue Bridge.

Sammy Watkins, an outreach worker with Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities (UGMTC), said his team saw movement from Pig’s Eye to the Randolph site throughout the day.

“I just brought a guy in from the Randolph location. We were not quite as successful getting people to come into UGMTC for services today because most people chose to go to the Randolph location,” Watkins said.

Watkins said his team followed people to the site and continued offering services.
