Family members say the painting was stolen in 1939 after its original owner Edward Epstein, a Jewish businessman living in Austria, attempted to flee the country.
HOPKINS, Minn. — A Minnesota family was reunited with a lost piece of artwork that had been missing since 1939.
The artwork, a small watercolor painting of an Austrian Count who served in the military in the 1800’s, was on display at a military museum in Austria.
Government officials in Austria researched the painting, and they discovered the piece was stolen by Nazis during the Holocaust.
“We have a federal commission that was established in 1998 that is systematically going through all the paintings that are in federal Austrian museums,” Austrian Deputy Consul General Johannes Gassner says.
