Como Zoo is celebrating a historic first after two grey crowned crane chicks successfully hatched.

The zoo announced the hatching on Tuesday, stating the two chicks had been named Amani, which means peace, and Baraka, which means blessing in Swahili. The names were selected by supporters of Como Friends.

Both were hatched out of public view in the holding area of the zoo’s giraffe building. This location was where their father, Houdini, and mother, Mutambi, chose as their nesting site.

The arrival of Amani and Baraka marks Como Zoo’s first successful hatching of grey crowned crane chicks.

Houdini and Mutambi had laid eggs in previous years since being paired together in a breeding program back in 2023, but none resulted in a surviving chick.
